Additionally, universities themselves are regulated by the Office for Students (OfS), which includes oversight of library facilities and information services as part of quality assessments. The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) also reviews library and learning support provision as part of institutional audits. For specialist academic library services such as digitisation or archival work, providers may hold accreditation from bodies like the Archives and Records Association (ARA) or the Institute of Conservation (IoC), depending on the nature of their work.

To verify a provider's credentials, you should first check whether key staff hold CILIP Chartered Librarian status by consulting the professional register on the CILIP website. Ask the provider directly for evidence of any relevant accreditation or professional memberships, including individual qualifications of senior staff. Check whether the institution using their services has been positively assessed by the OfS or QAA, as this reflects on the quality of support they provide. For specialist services, request certificates or documentation from relevant bodies such as the ARA or IoC. This verification matters because it ensures the service meets established professional standards, protects intellectual property and sensitive academic data, and gives you confidence that staff have undergone proper training and continuing professional development.
